American Eskimo Dog - The American Eskimo Dog is an attractive breed that has an extensive coat which is white in color. It has an appearance that could be likened to a small Samoyed. This breed falls under three categories, and these are standard, toy, and miniature. The American Eskimo dog has a head that is shaped like a wedge. The skull and muzzle should have a length which is identical. The ears are shaped like triangles, and should stand upright. The tail of the American Eskimo dog should curl over its back. The coat should always be white in color, and the skin should be gray or pink. The eyes of this breed should never be blue.

The exact origins of the American Eskimo is not well known. It appears that it is related to Nordic breeds, and it may share genetic traits with the Samoyed and White Keeshond. The dog was first registered by German immigrants in 1913. The popularity of this breed has increased since this time.

Temperament

These dogs are excellent for the family. They are loving and intelligent, and owners can train them easily. They enjoy being around children. The American Eskimo dog is a breed that does not have a large number of genetic disorders. However, owners will want to watch the eyes to make sure they’re healthy. The American Eskimo can develop retinal atrophy, and hip dysplasia is common with this breed as well. The coat should also be cleaned so the dog can be free of fleas. This breed has a maximum life expectancy of 15 years.

Exercise

These dogs are active, and enjoy receiving large amounts of exercise. Owners will want to take them on extended walks, or they can be unleashed in an enclosed area to run freely.

Special Grooming Needs

The American Eskimo has a dense coat which is simple to maintain. Owners will want to brush the coat firmly two times each week. Once the dog begins shedding, the coat will need to be brushed on a daily basis. These dogs shed a standard amount of fur.
