Spurlin had a vision of creating a smaller version of the Alaskan Husky, and she started breeding them by crossing Alaskan and Siberian Huskies, American Eskimos, and Schipperkes. She named the breed Alaskan Klee Kai, which means "small dog" in Inuit.
